Advice from a Small Press

Q&A: Working with Vintage Reflections

I just signed a contract with Vintage. When will my book be released?

Once we’ve received the signed contract in-house, we will notify you of the next opening in our release schedule, which, at present, would be sometime in 2012 for any books we sign this year.

How soon will the editing process begin?

Editing usually begins approximately five months prior to a book’s release.

What can I expect from the editing process?

After you sign a contract with Vintage, you will receive pre-edit guidelines that will start you on the journey. Then your book will be passed on to our editor where it will go through two rounds of edits. Once those edits are completed, the book will be sent to our editor-in-chief for a final proof. It will then be sent to you for one more read before finalization for print.

How long does the editing process take?

We can’t answer this specifically because it depends upon how much editing is required, i.e., if you have submitted a relatively clean manuscript with little or no mechanical, pacing, structure, or plot issues, it’s entirely possible you’ll complete edits in less than a month. Usually, though, you can count on the process taking at least two months.

I know nothing about promoting my book. Will Vintage help me?

Though we can’t promote books individually all the time, we do promote our catalog continually, and your book is sent to reviewers and entered in appropriate contests on our end. We do have an active author’s group where we discuss promotions, what works and what doesn’t, and we’re always happy to answer any questions you may have. We will make sure you know what you need to be doing to help your book sales.

Can my parents (or other family members) receive the same discount I receive for purchasing copies of my books?

No. Our author rates are for our authors only. You can, however, purchase the books and then sell them to family and friends at your cost.

When will I get paid?

As indicated in your contract, Vintage pays royalties monthly on or before the last day of the month.

If I’ve signed a contract with Vintage for one book, can I submit another book right away?

As a Vintage Reflections author, you’re always welcome to submit a book to us even if we are closed to outside submissions.
